You Are So Much More Than What You Do
Even when what you do is super important to lots of people. Even when What you do is super important to the world. And, yes, even when what you do is super important to you. When it arises from your heart and aligns with your values. When it's your passion. Your baby. The thing you know you were brought to this earth to do. Even then. It's what you do. It's not who you are.
It's easy to forget that sometimes. We can get so wrapped up in what we do that we identify with it. Identify ourselves by it. And then, when it changes, we feel a little lost. We start questioning who we are.
I've experience this myself. A few times. Who am I if I'm not a practicing CPA? Am I still a contributing member of society, and of my family, if I'm not going to work five days a week? Am I still a mom if my kids spend more nights at their Dad's house than mine?
Here's what I've learned. What I do changes. Sometimes rapidly and drastically. Who I am doesn't. At least no faster than the earth does. What I do is a vinyasa flow. Who I am is mountain pose.
Like so many truths in life, this is one I sometimes forget. I'm grateful for the reminders the universe so generously provides. They come from the most unexpected places. A sign on the subway. A chance meeting. A brief conversation.
