Will The Real Expert Please Stand Up?

Will The Real Expert Please Stand Up?

One of the best pieces of parenting advice I ever received was the eye opening and empowering assertion that I, not my child's pediatrician, was the expert in the exam room. Sure, he possessed lots of medical knowledge and understood better than I did about what was normal for children, but he didn't know my child a fraction as well as I did.

That intimate knowledge of her personality, patterns, and quirks made me the expert on my child. That status, coupled with the fierce love and protectiveness wired into all caring Moms by biology and evolution, combined to make me the most important person in the care of my child.

Simply put, doctors care a great deal, but no one cares about your child's well-being more than you do. So, the most accurate diagnosis and best solutions come when you put your heads together.

I tell this story to remind you that while you may seek out experts in various fields, you are the only expert on your life. Only you know your values, your strengths and challenges, where you are willing to compromise, and where you are not.  A doctor, personal trainer, coach, or financial adviser may have certain skills and knowledge that you don't, but you hold a vision for your future that will never be as clear or compelling to them as it is to you.

And while you may find it hard to believe at times, you have all you need inside you to make that vision real.  As advisers, we are here to help you access, use, and expand upon that inner wisdom by filling in any gaps on the technical side, holding you accountable, providing a sounding board, and the encouragement you need at times to keep moving confidently toward your goals.

A favorite part of my job as a financial adviser is being a thinking partner to my clients. Helping them talk through ideas, see things more clearly, and create a path forward that is uniquely theirs.  I bring the most value to clients who share that way of thinking, and want that kind of partner.  Not everyone does.  That's cool.

My best advice in seeking out experts all areas of life, is to make sure you've got a team that understands and supports your perspective, in just the way that you need it.
